I wanted to blog the garden as it took shape but it seemed silly staying under the umbrella of Bury gardeners so there is a new blog if you are curious called Florilegium

I would love to see you there. Leave a comment to say you have arrived.....burygardenershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07930807695134677074noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8698885336216370621.post-19820565510312918042018-01-07T14:26:00.000+00:002018-01-07T14:26:17.801+00:00Getting lighter every day.I know it is hard to believe in the first week of January that the days are actually starting to lengthen, but they are. That said, the bulbs in the garden are not showing much growth. I have quite a lot of crocus, daffodils, tulips and some hyacinth (which tend to revert to bluebells) in the front and back garden and they are very hard to find. Usually the daffs are easy to spot by now.

The free bulbs (a bag of daffodils) that I get every year from Summerseat are doing brilliantly in their container. This is the one that I am test running for the company that makes them and it is holding up well to the hostile weather.

They must be the one of the lowest maintenance plants ever. Very little watering, very little feeding and they do this a couple of times a year and the flowers last for months. How could it get any better.

As for something which is nigh on totally neglected here comes another one. I have had this Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera bridgessii) so long that I have no idea when I got it - literally years ago. I have never re-potted it and it must be choked to death in its original pot. It gets moved hither and yon depending on what I want to do with any surface or windowsill and gets it gets watered and fed if its lucky. In return it does this for me.

This year I am hoping to change the borders over to just flowering shrubs - this does include the roses and trees and shrubs already in place. I want to start to remove the perennials and replace with shrubs as and when I can afford it, or see something I like, not necessarily the same thing! It will be tough to do as I love flowers and can not imagine living without basics like poppies and columbines and many others. My thinking is that as I get older the garden needs to be more and more trouble free and a shrubbery seems to be the way to go.

I happily accepted.

Firstly the site itself Planters Online is an excellent site to visit. Visually attractive and easy to negotiate. There are many filters you can choose to reduce the amount of pots you need to trawl through if you are looking for a specific size, colour or finish.

The delivery time was also excellent and my well packed trough arrived just two days later.

This summer I have been looking for five new 'long toms' to replace the ones I currently use to grow my herbs in outside the back door, but it seems I can only find them on line these days so haven't made a real effort to get on with it. My other thought was a couple of long troughs and plant three or so herbs in each. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of lifting large plant filled troughs twice a year when removing old plants pre-winter and replanting with new plants in the spring, so the notion of a fibreglass or plastic pot was attractive to me.

My next consideration was that all the pots in my garden are terracotta and its a look I like and didn't want to deviate from. Many of the pots sold by Planters Online are very dashing and modern and while they are lovely to look at they are not what my raggety, taggety, fluffy garden is about.

I decided on one which was described as terracotta and with a matt surface: ARTESA 25 terracotta matt. This would cost £35.91. I am not all that familiar with the usual price for these sorts of pots but since owning it have looked at similar things in four different garden centres and would say this was a pretty average sort of price. I did find an unpriced one in B & M (!!!) earlier in the year before I set off on this journey and declined it as it was £11 - little did I know then!

I confess it isn't the colour I wanted. I was hoping for something close to the usual terracotta colour. I am hoping it will mute down a little over the winter. I am sure the product manufacturer would claim it will keep its colour and texture whatever the winter throws at it - we shall see.

These planters are made for indoor or outdoor use. If they go outside they should, of course, have holes drilled in them to supply good drainage for the plant(s) or have a generous base of gravel in the bottom to do the same. Similarly indoors, plants would thrive better if they had some means of draining off excess water away from the plant(s).

This is no particular criticism of this seller but I wish pot manufacturers would have the sense to add this sort of instruction to the label and save a few plants 'lives. My label read: UV resistant, frost proof, shock resistant, light weight.

Again for a complete novice it is useful to mark up places to drill when you flip the pot over. Ideally if they could mold half a dozen areas more thinly that the rest of the material so they could just be tapped through with something like a nail and hammer that would be even better - not everyone has a drill.

The flipside of this pot looked like this

Do you tap out the huge circle in the centre? Do you drill through the six small indents round the edge? Maybe none of these, just make your own holes?

You may also notice that the pot sort of has legs - the main box is slightly raised from the ground with edges that will also allow water to drain away. This will prevent the pot sitting in water and, more importantly, stop it freezing to the ground in the winter if we have a really bad spell. All my terracotta pots are raised a little in some way to prevent this happening.

We went with drilling out the six places with the indents. Seems odd having them round the edges only but there is a sort of run off trough all round the edges to catch water. So here is the brand new spanking pot ready to take its dozen free bulbs from Summerseat for its overwintering trial run.

[If you get a membership card for Summerseat (also works at Bradley Fold) you get money back and offers like free spring bulbs.]

As it is probably destined for the herb ledge next spring, it may as well live close up to it as that will be the weather it will get for its future life.

So, in summary

the website is a delight

the selection of pots available is good

the price is probably pretty average

the delivery excellent

the item promises to be durable

If you like modern plastic/fibreglass pots for indoors or out this would seem a good place to shop for them.

Unless it does anything dramatic you may not hear any more about it until next year. Watch this space.
They are each taken from the same position (roughly the eight points of the compass). It is really interesting to look at them now and then and remember the steps the garden has gone through.

This year I forgot and I ended up taking the photos the third week in August instead of mid-July - better that, than not at all. Here is the set of the east facing border as an example of what I mean by change.

Our first summer in 2007 and we had the patio in and the borders cut. We had another small seating area in the corner and the borders were colour coded. This was the red border.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Before I start moaning about just how much I am hating cats right now I had better say that in my lifetime I have been the owner of five cats - at one time I had two at the same time......so I quite understand the 'passion' for them as pets.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Maybe my current situation is karma/payback for all the poo my cats must have deposited on other people's gardens over the years!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Whatever, my garden is a cat's toilet at the front and at the back, in the beds and on the lawn. There isn't a single day where I am not left a little (or large!) present; some days more than one. I am fairly sure it came about because until last winter we used to spend half a year in the States and the cats had free rein. I am trying to believe that the quantity is reducing by degrees as they get used to the fact we are in full time residence.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have tried just about every suggestion under the sun that is practicable, with no success whatsoever. Indeed they were the reason for my giving up trying to grow edibles in the back garden a few years ago.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In a last desperate effort we are currently trying two of these.......

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They are solar powered sonic cat (and dog) repellers. They emit a high pitch sound which is uncomfortable for cats and dogs but humans can't hear. There is a suggestion that children might be able to hear it. I certainly can't. They have a 70 degree spread with a twenty foot (plus) reach. As our front garden seems to be the worst hit we are using them out there right now. It has proved difficult on our corner plot to site them so they form a barrier across the garden. Think we've cracked it. They have a couple of small flickering lights which flick on when something comes within its range so it is easy to check they are still working. We have no means of hard wiring them so they rely on recharged batteries.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Sadly our front garden is mostly in the shade (NE facing) so the solar element doesn't work at all. We also have a lot of foot and car passing traffic so the batteries run down very quickly. [The photo above was taken in sunlight in the back garden]

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For us this means they are a bit of a pain as we have to keep an eye on them almost daily to check they are still working and then charge the batteries when they are not - so, for us, they don't seem a good long term solution.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Amazingly we have only had one deposit since they went in so I am fairly confident they are working. I am living in hopes that the eight cats - really! - who use our garden may get in the habit of going elsewhere - huge apologies to anyone who inherits them.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We visited Sizergh Castle in mid August but it is still not to late to go there - just about an hour and a quarter from Bury so not too daunting for a day out.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The house/castle is decidedly interesting and is very 'lived in' which makes it probably more interesting than many which can be very sterile and museum-like. There is the usual National Trust eatery and gift shop - so ice cream and cakes and a rootle round for some presents for folks is not a bad way to spend a sunny afternoon.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is just a handful of photos to whet your appetite...
My front garden does have something flowering in it pretty much the whole year but I do love July when the crocosmia Lucifer is doing its thing and the hanging basket is beginning to flesh itself out.

On their website it says the garden centre began in 1984. I am fairly certain I shopped there for many years prior to that when it was just a nursery. As I am still going there forty years on it must be a testament to its worth. Admittedly, being an old fogey, I sort of regret its success as it has now transformed into pretty much any other large garden centre. Hey ho....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> I stopped to read the notice board on the way out, as I usually do, and saw these.....
Summer goes from April through October!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Frequently keep on top of weeds and cutting lawns

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every week I scatter slug pellets (very thinly) to try to keep the snail and slug population down. When you meet one huge one five feet up a wall you know you are not necessarily winning. Most weeks I feed hanging baskets and pots.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every two weeks, I treat my magnolias/camellias differently to the rest of the garden - three are in pots and one planted in the border. They are watered with a sequestered iron feed. I use Miracle-Grow but, again, any feed suitable for Camellias and azaleas will do. The box says use from March to September but being this far North it is probably better to stop at the end of July (ish) as they can be too weak and sappy when they are fed to stand any cold snaps which will turn up quicker up here. They need to toughen up a little. This is definitely needed if yours are looking in any way spindly or the leaves going a paler colour. Two doses and my wan camellia is a third taller, full of leaves and they are dark green and glossy again.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Monthly<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - scatter a general purpose granular feed pretty much every where. I use Growmore or Phostrogen - it doesn't matter what, just a handful of 7:7:7 strewn thinly will keep the garden fed. The numbers just mean it has equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphate, potassium so it is a general all-purpose fertiliser. You can buy a specialised one for pretty much everything<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">- like one for roses, or shrubs, or perennials, or clematis, etc etc etc but, unless you have loads of money and time it probably isn't worth it. Ideally, of course, we should all be doing a Monty Don and smothering our borders with home made compost.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A couple of times in the season the lawn could do with a weed and feed treatment. After the first one you will need to scarify the lawn to get out the (now) dead moss and last year's debris. You might want to treat the lawn to another session some time later in the summer. Again not too late so it can toughen up ready for the winter.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In hot weather: I am currently frazzling in 28 degrees of heat so it is a good reminder that any pots or hanging baskets need daily (and sometimes more!) watering in very hot weather. Any new planting, especially trees and shrubs, need frequent watering whether the weather is hot or not. By the same token if your garden is reasonably well established don't worry about watering it - the lawn and garden will spring back quickly as soon as it rains even if it is looking a bit dry right now.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have eight (four pairs) climbing roses on some trellises in the back garden. They were very badly massacred to allow the new fence to be put up last Christmas and they did almost nothing this year - very spindly, unhealthy growth with a handful of flowers. This is one of the pair of white roses on the side which wasn't replaced and they did reasonably OK and have cut back for the winter in the usual way. That said they hadn't been disturbed and still weren't great (???)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This (below) is one of the New Dawn pair which looked just awful this year. New Dawn is as tough as old boot so I am surprised. I really don't know what to do for it. I didn't have a single decent lateral to tie in and trim back to. This felt like the best I could do. I may leave it at this and see what happens next summer after a rest and good feed or, the other thinking is, I get really brave and cut every stem down to a foot above ground and see if we can start again. I would welcome opinions if anyone has sorted out an old unproductive rose.

I cut back the stem and parked it on a windowsill expecting the leaves to die. It got a teeny bit of water now and then and that was it. Gradually it grew to this.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My other half removed the timers for the watering system and turned off the taps that feed the outside taps. If you have any outside tap that doesn't fully drain (neither of mine do) they should really be wrapped in something like bubble wrap to keep the worst of the freeze out. It can freeze further back than the tap if you have any water trapped in a pipe and that can expand and crack the pipe and next year you'll have a leak. Often they are in the very worst of places and a fiddle to replace/repair.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cut down dead and dying herbaceous plants. That said, I leave ones that will look good in the frost and snow and those that may feed the birds or make a winter home for good bugs and critters. Basically I hack down the ones that will fall over and become straggly messes.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I threw away my hanging basket and two chimney pot fillers that have done their thing and I will be off to somewhere like Park Farm to find their replacements for the winter.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Climbing roses can take a small hack back to stop them flailing around in any high winds. I do the major trim in Spring. As we are 'in the North' I don't want to risk too much die back from any frost if we get a bad winter. To be truthful I never managed to get this job done in my time in the garden this time, but I will be doing it soon.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I shaped up a couple of olive trees that came out of their pots and went into the border this year. They had put on a lot of growth and I want to keep them almost like topiary balls. So, obeying the maxim 'cut for shape in the autumn and for growth in the Spring' I gave them a trim.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Most of all I was out there to plant a heap of bulbs. B & Q have a pretty good deal on some nice quality bulbs right now so I picked some up on a paint buying trip.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you do the maths you might figure out that three of each variety meant planting 126 bulbs - doesn't sound much but it was enough for me. I remembered the days I would go out with fair size sackfuls of daffodils to plant..... not any more.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These really are tulips from Amsterdam brought back from a friend's trip there. They have gone in a pot rather than the ground as I don't do very well with tulips here - too wet for them really.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As for the planting - this blog is more about sharing what I've got away with for donkeys' years when gardening, rather than the perfect way to do things.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ideally (most) bulbs like free draining soil, so you can add sharp sand or grit to the hole plus a little bone meal. The hole should be twice the depth of the bulb. In reality I make the deepest slit I can make with my trowel, wiggle it a bit, push the bulb in (right way up) pull the trowel out and close the slit - job done. It works well enough for me.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, I need to spend one more day out there, before winter sets in, to hack off some climbing rose stems, check the borders, sprinkle slug pellets absolutely everywhere. I do mean everywhere - they love lurking in nooks and crannies especially over winter; they need to be lured out in hopes of killing a bunch of them. Less to breed in the spring. Reminder: only scatter the amount recommended; more is not better, it actually puts them off because the smell is too much for them. This is a bait after all, so they hunt the bits of food (aka slug pellet) lying around and Goodnight Vienna.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At this time of year people with beautiful lawns aerate them and brush in sand and bone-meal to help the drainage and to strengthen root growth - do NOT feed at this time of year - you'll get soft sappy top growth and basically it will weaken the grass. I skip a couple of these steps but I do scatter some bone meal over the lawn to boost the root growth.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On that cheerful note of snail death and crushed bones - bye for now - time to hunker down and dream of cocoa days ahead.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

It was planted to hide the concrete slabs which edged the patio.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

2007

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This means the garden side of the hedge appears 'uneven as the garden drops two feet diagonally from the left to the right side. I have always intended that the hedge would be about 18 inches high above the edge of the patio and on a level looking from that side.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now we have the conservatory it certainly needs to be in line with the bricks on the conservatory wall when looking from either side.

2015

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Box is notoriously slow growing and here we are nine years later (well eight actually as this is a photo from last year) and we still aren't quite there but, at last, we are pretty close.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every year I have cut it to shape with some hand shears and every year have had a blister the size of saucer on my hand to prove it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This year I succumbed to a great offer (Groupon? £16.99) and bought some small cordless shears. I admit to being doubtful that either they would be strong enough or that they wouldn't chew up the box. Wrong in both cases. They were sharp and efficient and did the job in about a tenth of the time and sans blisters.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I got my other half to cut me three pieces of wood and screw them together to make me a cutting guide. I just slide this 'bench' along as I cut.....

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and used it as a guide, cutting from the other side of the hedge and keeping an eye on the top of the bench to make sure everything was cut to that height.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The traditional day for cutting box hedges is Derby Day - first week in June - but really you can do it more than once a year and pretty much as often as you like in the growing season. Otherwise like almost all pruning/hedge cutting the general rule is cut for growth in spring (March/April)and cut for shape in late summer (August/September).

We had a conversation about how often to do this or that so I thought I'd list the basic stuff I do and how often I do it, in hopes of helping any Newbie.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Feeding summer flowering containers and hanging baskets: Use half strength cheap tomato food - obviously you can use super-duper 'proper' plant food if you want to but the half strength tomato food seems to do the job. Water it in once a week. I try to do mine on a Sunday so I think of it as their Sunday dinner.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Slug pellets: Start killing on Valentine's day (14th February) - the St Valentine's Day Massacre! Then I do it around the 14th of every month - that makes it easy to remember. To be fair the frequency may well depend on your slug pellet population - some people do it as much as weekly. The key to success in keeping the numbers down is start early in the year and go on through until October - you can take November through January off! The other key to success is use the pellets very, very thinly - READ and FOLLOW the instructions - one pellet about every six inches. No, you don't have to put them down one at a time but just be sure you are not over-using them - the smell from loads of them actually deters slugs from eating them.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Feed borders: Give them a good feed in the Spring as soon as you see some decent growth on plants. Choice of food is down to you. I generally use any 7:7:7 mix that I can buy cheaply. Those numbers will make sense to you when you read a box like Miracle Grow/Grow More/Phostrogen. I have also lobbed chicken pellets at the garden when I've seen a good deal on those. You could leave it at that but I like to give particular plants a boost during the summer to keep them at their best - things like roses and clematis benefit from a summer snack.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Weed and Feed lawns: Pretty much the same as feeding the borders the grass needs a feed around March/April and again in high Summer (July/August). You may as well apply a weed and feed product rather than just a lawn food and get both jobs done together. In the Spring I find I need to rake out the dead moss after a week or so. In the later session I might do that again if its been a wet summer and might also lightly over-seed with a mixture of grass seed and soil if I am feeling really keen on my lawn.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cut hedges: the general rule for pruning anything (and hedge cutting is pruning) is that you prune for shape in the autumn and for growth in the spring so choose which it is you want the plant to do. Hedges like my little box hedge can be done just once a year if you aren't looking for a pristine look all year round. The tradition for box is to cut it on Derby Day (first week in June) BUT I prefer to cut it once a year in August - this will do for most hedges. If you want to go for the two cut approach then May and September is fine.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lots of potted plants you buy are really 'designed' to be a one-off. Many people, like me, think that things like orchids and amaryllis (often gifts) are just supposed to do their thing and then be binned - far too difficult to do anything else with?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Not so, I have just discovered......
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had a Tesco orchid (phalenopsis) which bloomed beautifully and for a long while and then was reduced to a few sad leaves and a short stump. I kept it as I had a sad little landing window sill with nothing on it. It got very little water and virtually no feeding. This seems to be roughly the right thing to do. Look what I have now......<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">..
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In exactly the same vein I had two Ikea (£3?) amaryllis at Christmas that did their glorious thing and I was curious as to what they would do if I just kept them going. Mine have done this....

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They must be well over three feet tall, strong as an ox and glorious blemish free deep green leaves. The googled advice to get them to flower again this year is to chuck them in a darkish, coolish place at the beginning of September and let the leaves die off, re-pot the bulb in an inch of fresh compost and bring back in when temperature goes below 10 degrees centigrade.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Put half a pound in big jug. Cook three minutes in microwave, stir in half a pound of caster sugar, stir until its all dissolved, put back in microwave for four minutes and its done. Keep in plastic box or jar in fridge.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had lunch at Park farm the other day and they had damsons for £1.49 a pound - rare as hen's teeth to find these days. I bought two pounds, divided them into four and put three half pounds of damsons in just simple ziplock bags and then in the freezer. I don't want a ton of jam just for the two of us so half a pound now and then when I fancy it works for me.... and it makes the damson season last longer.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I didn't cut the fruit off the stone, it all goes in together. My mom used to say if you complained about the stones that if you'd found too many then you must be eating too much of the jam! We just fish them out as we go along - but do be careful when eating it they can hide inside a skin. You can spend a jolly ten minutes fiddling them out at the finished cooking stage if you want to - but not when its at full temperature - jam is exceedingly hot.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">nothing beats a jam butty

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I have a ton of damson jam uses - there's a particularly nice almond cake with damson jam threaded through it but to be honest not much beats a jam butty with homemade jam and freshly baked bread - this one is all ready for folding and eating.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I haven't added the recipe to the links at the top of the blog as I already have microwave jam instructions up there and the plum recipe will cover damsons perfectly well.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I thought the recipe given here was over-sweet for my taste so I will go back to my original instructions (see Microwave jam in the recipe tabs at the top) as that has less sugar and added lemon juice. Each to their own.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

He and two friends were doing a Segway ride so I was able to wander the gardens at my leisure. It was the most wonderful experience...
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We arrived half an hour before the house and gardens were officially open so I, quite literally, had the estate to myself - not even a volunteer in sight let alone a member of the public. What an incredible feeling to be able to wander through the gardens in the sunshine in high summer and have it all to myself. Sheer joy.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started off in the most fabulous wild flower meadow I have ever seen. I am so sorry that none of my photos convey the glory of this area to you. You will simply have to imagine standing waist deep in flowers either side of you on a fairly narrowly mowed path through the centre of a vast field. Flower upon flower each seeming better than the one before.
So, what at first appears to be a grand Tudor House is in fact a Victorian 'homage'.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We were visiting the hall and garden as part of <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(my husband's birthday)<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> overnight stay in a hotel in Lymm. Being mid August the English summer was in full flow with a warm day and thoroughly grey skies!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you like Victorian stately piles this is certainly one to float your boat. Being a dyed in the wool neo-classical Georgian I can't say it was my cup of tea.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That said, the ceilings in every room were remarkable and the grand hall impressive to say the least. I can't show you the interior, of course, as usual photography is not allowed inside the house. It is a family home (the same family for 550 years) and still used occasionally. I was once told the ban on photos is an insurance issue (?) The fact the house is still something of a home adds some appeal as it looks to be 'lived in' rather than frozen in aspic.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The gardens don't have a feel of a grand designed landscaped but more of a collected hotchpotch of gardens that have been added in over the years by various occupants. Again, this is all a matter of taste as to whether that makes the landscape a better or worse one ..... sadly, for me it is just not cohesive enough to flow nicely from one space to another.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arley is especially famous for the long border. It was one of the earliest of its kind and is said to have set the style for the English long border - simply crammed with every plant imaginable. This is one small section ......

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The vegetable garden is to die for and you are overwhelmed with lettuce envy as you step inside. It certainly beats my (ex) three six foot long raised beds. I often wonder where the produce goes in these vast estates.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yet again though, I still found the area odd as it has a tall hedged area and arbour at its heart - all very formal and something I though you would expect to find in a landscape with a great vista laid out in front of it to be admired from your seat. The kitchen garden, though lovely, somehow doesn't seem to warrant it.

Strange, but true - not only do I get the satisfaction of having brought something back from the brink of death but they only cost me pennies. It is always worth the gamble of something making it or not - they rarely fail with a bit of TLC.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This lovely passion flower has three six foot stems and over twenty buds to come out (more to come after that no doubt). It was a sad little thing in a tiny pot for 49p back in the Spring. I had bought my friend one for her birthday at the usual sort of price from a reputable nursery which didn't look fantastic for its price and has struggled to do anything as yet. A short time after giving that away I thought how much I wanted a passion flower for myself and I saw this one.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At the same time as buying the passion flower the shop was selling what appeared to be two dead sticks for a pound - not properly labelled - could have said magnolias? I genuinely thought these might be consigned to the rubbish bin but I faithfully stuck each of their badly damaged hairy little roots into a pot of their own where they remained all winter as two dead sticks. Spring arrives and - and Bingo! - I have two very promising magnolias (????).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have no idea what variety they are so they could be anything from six feet to thirty feet tall and wide when mature. Looking now at the stick and the size of the leaf it is reasonable to think they are common old magnolia soulangia, so they are the big ones!! I am seventy and they take twenty years to maturity so may not be a bother to me when they swamp the garden. In truth I do have the right spot for one of them. The other may just reside in a pot for a few years and I will think again then. Meanwhile whoopee-do, three lives saved; total cost, £1.49.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I showed you some photos of my lovely fluffy border a couple of days ago - all four of them were something like that at that time. Eventually they start to 'go over' and look untidy and some plants bully out the others so this is a good time to give it a judicious chop.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Two corners have eight feet high thalictrum in them which is fabulous when it is in full flood but they had finished flowering and even though they have pretty seed heads they always swamp out other things around them so it was time for them to go.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I cut back all the thalictrum (meadow-rue), oriental poppies, granny bonnets and dead-headed the roses by cutting them back quite a few inches. I then lightly fed the garden with some 7:7:7 national Growmore. These are granules and easy to chuck a handful here and there a couple of times in the growing season - once in late Spring and once in late summer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are lucky with this chop and feed and weather permitting we often get a second flush of most things.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also did my usual mid month slug pelleting - a bit late I know but I wasn't here to do it on time. I tied in some bits and bobs and basically did a close inspection of this and that to check all is well. This hour or so is time well spent if you can give yourself up to it round about this time of year.
I got these on sale at a silly price (£1.99???) from Wyevale Garden centre but worth keeping your eye open for as they are proving very handy.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I just Googled them and you can get them for around a fiver (three in a pack) from various places. They store flat and therefore easily, they won't rust or rot(?) and are made from recycled plastic..... coffee cups I think.
I have been lucky enough to see many of the major gardens and places such as Hidcote and Kiftsgate and many others and most are just overwhelmingly lovely but for some reason Wollerton has my heart.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I 'discovered' it many years ago in its 'infancy' when it was just a private garden open to the public now and then and I have seen it mature and develop further and further right down into the copse at the bottom.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This time I hadn't been for about three years and the change is palpable. It is much 'bigger'. The planting that is... the plants have grown and matured and have packed every little inch. I love it only slightly less, but the doubt is there. It had (has?) very defined rooms with glimpses long and short from one to another this seems to perform at a lower key when the planting is almost swamping you and I think that is a shame as it seemed to be the key to its particular charm.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is now fairly busy with visitors and I am (unreasonably) greedy in wanting it to myself. One of my very best visits there (last time) was in the rain. The garden took on a whole new face and was almost just mine. This time I bobbed around with others and grudgingly shared it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are photos of bits of my garden in July. It is difficult to choose a favourite month as each one offers something different and always a favourite amongst it somewhere but I really do have a real passion for the lovely 'Lucifer' that flowers its socks off in the front garden at this time of the year.
